24-01-12 Zonal leaps 140 places to fifth in the SME300 list

The SME300 awards celebrate the success of Scotland's best performing small to medium sized companies.

Following our most successful year yet, Zonal has leapt up 140 places to fifth this year. Business Insider magazine said this about Zonal:

One of the highest climbers in the table is Edinburgh-based Zonal Retail Data Systems, which leapt up 140 places to fifth position this year. Zonal, which employs nearly 200 people, designs EPoS solutions for hospitality venues like pubs, hotels and restaurants as well as kitchen management systems which do clever things like alerting waiting staff when food is ready to be served. Zonal also provides basic supplies with everything from printer ribbons and cables to spare till drawers. It designs and manufactures all its own hardware and software in Scotland.

Clients include Wetherspoons, Belhaven, Butlins, Festival Inns, Greene King, Folio Hotels, Montpeliers, Mean Fiddler, Tiger Tiger and Walkabout, with over 17,000 of its terminals in use around the world.

In 2010 the company acquired Freshnet, an online ordering and purchase-to-pay provider and it now plans to expand its base in hospitality, particularly the restaurant sector, with further acquisitions and recruitment of experienced personnel. Managing Director Stuart McLean says turnover for the current year including Freshnet is around £30m.

Zonal has recently launched a new terminal which McLean believes will give it a real competitive edge. It also has some new software products such as its intuitive recipe management product which gives access to real time supply chain information and enables customers to efficiently control the ever-increasing and complex food offerings the hospitality industry demands.

"We have also signed some fantastic new customers this year, for example Spirit," adds McLean. "With Spirit as a customer we now have three out of the top four managed house operators as Zonal clients."
